My father did a lot of diving & snorkeling when he was a young man.  The reason he stopped was sheer fear.   He said that one day they were diving and this huge manta ray slipped silently through the water above them.  He always said that he couldn’t dive after that because he was convinced if there were fish that big that wouldn’t hurt you there was sure a shit fish that much bigger that would.
